2026-2027 First Annual New York State Statewide Spanish Spelling Bee Competition

October 8, 2026

The New York Staff and Curriculum Development Network (SCDN) and the Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages (OBEWL) are collaborating with students in Grades 4 to 8 to participate in the First Annual New York State Spanish Spelling Bee Competition, which is open to students regardless of program.

The Spanish Spelling Bee is a wonderful opportunity to promote academic excellence and high standards for the diverse populations of our public schools. Participation in this competition will help students strengthen their Spanish language skills and give them an opportunity to showcase their knowledge for family and friends.

To be eligible to participate in the statewide Spanish Spelling Bee, Districts must submit their intent to participate using this by Friday, October 30, 2026.

Districts/schools will designate a Spanish-speaking Coordinator/Advisor to coordinate and promote the school-wide competition, followed by a district-level competition. A meeting to prepare school/district Spelling Bee Coordinators will be conducted via Zoom on 听November. Invitations will be sent to those who intend to participate.

First-place winners from each school district will be invited to a region-wide competition conducted by their regional BOCES/Joint Management Team (JMT)/Big Five.听 Districts should coordinate with their respective BOCES/JMT/Big Five by Mid-April 2027 to ensure that the Regional Spanish Spelling Bee Competitions are completed by Mid-May 2027. Winners will advance to the Statewide Championship Competition to be held in Albany in June 2027.

Thank you in advance for your support of our Spanish-speaking and Spanish-learning students and for your continued commitment to language education for all students. For the NYS Spanish Spelling Bee Guidelines and Rules, please refer to the attached manual and supplemental documents.
